Up until year 2000 hiking used to be quite different to what it is today. Hikers relied on maps, compasses, orienting skills and hiking marcations for finding their safe ways around the wilderness.
Then around the turn of the century accurate GPS became widely available to civilians and a decade later smartphones were created, which almost from the start featured GPS receivers and were able to track users positions. This brought a plethora of smartphone applications that are related to their owners position which became quite useful for hikers.
My passion are maps, mapping apps and I also love hiking. My drive for hiking is not only to explore and enjoy nature, but also to record my hikes and use different apps to help me along the way. On this website I write about them - about mobile apps for hikers. There is a large amount of apps out there, some fantastic, some not so. When the niche of the app is narrow, I tend to try several related apps at the same time and write about the one I consider the best one for the task. I will however try to cover a multitude of navigation apps as this is the core interest for hikers.
